Remembrance Rescue Project – FDNY R5
I just came across some fascinating updates about the restoration of X-FDNY Rescue 5, one of the iconic fire trucks that was present at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. Scott Nacheman recently spotted this truck getting worked on in Northbrook as part of the Rescue Remembrance Project. This project has been a significant endeavor, and previously, we shared stories about another similar vehicle, X-FDNY R-4, which was also acquired.
Attached are some images of Rescue 5 during its restoration process. These photos really capture the effort being put into restoring this piece of history to its former glory. You can see how the truck is slowly taking shape under careful supervision.
This news comes directly from the Remembrance Rescue Project, who have been meticulously documenting every step of the restoration. According to their latest update in December 2011, Rescue 5 was transported to their Chicago facility where it is being restored as closely as possible to its original state. The truck recently underwent a fresh coat of paint by Capital Truck Body in Cicero, giving it a new lease on life. Currently, it's at MPC Lighting in Northbrook for its lighting upgrades, while Jacquette Custom Lettering is adding the final touches with intricate striping and hand-painting the original Rescue artwork.
The attention to detail is truly remarkable. It's inspiring to see how they're preserving this important piece of history. Here are more recent shots of the truck after its paint job and during its assembly phase. Each picture tells a story of dedication and respect for those who served.
It’s exciting to think that this truck will soon be making an appearance at FDIC in Indianapolis later this month. I can't wait to see how it looks fully restored and ready to honor those heroes.
Stay tuned for more updates as the project progresses!
