In recent years, the demand for construction machinery and equipment in Hungary has increased significantly

In recent years, the British Construction Machinery Consulting Co., Ltd. has published a detailed report on the state of the construction machinery market in Hungary. Despite having a population of just over 10 million, Hungary stands out as one of the stronger economies in Central and Eastern Europe, ranking third after Poland and the Czech Republic. The country's stable economic growth and active infrastructure development have significantly boosted the demand for construction equipment. In 2006, sales of construction machinery rose by 29% compared to 2004, when Hungary joined the European Union, although this was still 5% lower than in 2005. Looking ahead, the firm predicts that annual sales will remain around 1,500 units over the next two years. JCB emerged as the leading supplier in the Hungarian market in 2006, selling 280 units, including 177 backhoe loaders and 50 telescopic handlers. Their local agents were TerraHungaria and Gitr. Caterpillar followed closely as the second-largest supplier, with Huntraco distributing 265 units. Known for its dominance in hydraulic excavators and track-type tractors, Caterpillar also performed well in other categories such as backhoe loaders and wheel loaders. Komatsu’s agent in Hungary, Kuhn, saw strong growth, particularly in the backhoe loader, mini excavator, and crawler bulldozer segments. Volvo operated through its own subsidiaries, selling over 80 machines, including 41 wheel loaders and 22 backhoe loaders. Ingersoll Rand – Bobcat's Hungarian agent, Innova-Agro, sold 55 units, mainly skid steer loaders and telehandlers. The demand for used construction equipment is also robust in Hungary, with most of the second-hand machines coming from Germany and Austria. In 2006, nearly 500 used machines were sold, including 140 backhoe loaders. Interestingly, there is limited demand for small excavators in Hungary, largely due to the availability of low-cost labor, which makes backhoe loaders and skid steer loaders more commonly used. However, the market for small excavators is expected to grow gradually, reaching around 100 units by 2009. Wheeled excavators saw a surge in 2005, but their sales dropped to 60 units in 2006. The core models are in the 17- to 20-ton range, with Caterpillar, Hyundai, and New Holland being the main suppliers. Sales of wheeled excavators are divided between mining (over 25 tons) and construction (around 23 tons). In 2006, 69% of new equipment sold was from Caterpillar, New Holland, Komatsu, and Hitachi, while the used equipment market was dominated by imports from Germany and Austria. Caterpillar maintained a dominant position in the track-type tractor segment, holding 52% of the market in 2006. Its D6 and D8 models are widely used due to their durability and reliability. Wheel loader sales remained steady, with demand concentrated on 150–250 hp models. Volvo was a key player, accounting for 33% of total sales in 2006. Backhoe loaders remained the most popular equipment in Hungary, making up 26% of all sales in 2006. JCB led the market with a 45% share, reflecting its strong presence in construction and municipal projects. Skid steer loader sales increased to 226 units in 2006, with Slovakia-based WayIndustry taking the lead. With growing demand from agriculture, industry, and road maintenance, further growth is expected. Telescopic handlers ranked second in popularity after backhoe loaders, with strong growth in recent years. Over 75% of these machines are used in agricultural applications. Manitou, a French brand, captured 34% of the market in Hungary through its local agent Axial. Dump trucks common in the UK and Spain are less popular in Hungary, where cheaper and more versatile off-road dump trucks dominate the market. Motor grader sales declined in 2006, reaching only 10 units. New Holland’s 120 hp and 150 hp models are the most sought-after. Asphalt paving machines continue to see steady demand, primarily among road renovation contractors. Vögele has long held a monopoly in this segment in Hungary. In the compaction equipment sector, dual-steel roller compactors and self-propelled rollers remain widely used in road construction and maintenance. Major suppliers include BMW, Caterpillar, Puma, and Dynapac.
