In recent years, the demand for construction machinery and equipment in Hungary has increased significantly
In recent years, the British Construction Machinery Consulting Co., Ltd. has provided an in-depth analysis of the construction machinery market in Hungary. Despite having a population of just over 10 million, Hungary stands out as one of the stronger economies in Central and Eastern Europe, ranking third after Poland and the Czech Republic. The country's stable economic growth and active infrastructure development have significantly boosted demand for construction equipment. In 2006, sales of construction machinery saw a 29% increase compared to 2004, when Hungary joined the European Union, although this was 5% lower than the previous year. Looking ahead, the consultancy predicts that annual sales will remain around 1,500 units over the next two years.
JCB was a leading supplier in Hungary’s construction machinery market in 2006, with 280 units sold, including 177 backhoe loaders and 50 telescopic handlers. Their local agents were TerraHungaria and Gitr. Caterpillar followed closely, with Huntraco distributing 265 units, particularly excelling in hydraulic excavators and track-type tractors. Komatsu, through its agent Kuhn, also experienced strong growth, especially in backhoe loaders and mini excavators. Volvo operated through its own subsidiaries, selling over 80 units, including 41 wheel loaders and 22 backhoe loaders. Ingersoll Rand’s Bobcat division, represented by Innova-Agro, sold 55 units, mainly skid steer loaders and telehandlers.
The demand for used machinery in Hungary remains robust, with Germany and Austria being the primary sources. In 2006, nearly 500 used machines were sold, including 140 backhoe loaders. Interestingly, there is limited demand for small excavators due to the availability of cheap labor, which makes backhoe loaders and skid steer loaders more commonly used. However, small excavator demand is expected to grow slowly, reaching around 100 units by 2009.
Wheeled excavator sales saw a sharp rise in 2005 but dropped to 60 units in 2006. The core models are in the 17–20 ton range, with Caterpillar, Hyundai, and New Holland as top suppliers. Sales of larger wheeled excavators (over 25 tons) are primarily for mining and quarrying, while 23-ton models are used in construction. In 2006, 69% of new equipment came from Caterpillar, New Holland, Komatsu, and Hitachi, while the used equipment market was dominated by German and Austrian imports.
Caterpillar held a commanding 52% market share in track-type tractors, with the D6 and D8 models being the most popular. Wheel loader sales remained steady, with 150–250 hp models driving demand. Volvo led the segment, accounting for 33% of total sales. Backhoe loaders continued to dominate the market, making up 26% of all sales in 2006, with JCB holding a 45% market share.
Skid steer loader sales increased to 226 units in 2006, with Slovakia-based WayIndustry taking the lead. Demand is expected to grow further due to agricultural and industrial needs. Telescopic handlers ranked second in popularity, with over 75% used in agriculture. Manitou, through its Hungarian agent Axial, captured 34% of the market.
Dump trucks common in the UK and Spain are less prevalent in Hungary, largely due to competition from more affordable off-road dump trucks. Motor grader sales fell to 10 units in 2006, with New Holland’s 120 hp and 150 hp models being the main offerings. Asphalt paving machines remain in steady demand, with Vögele maintaining a monopoly in this segment. In compaction equipment, dual-steel rollers and self-propelled rollers continue to be widely used, with BMW, Caterpillar, Puma, and Dynapac as key suppliers.
