CFD firefighter shot by CPD (updated and corrected)

Initial reports can be misleading:

At 4:06 PM, the Chicago Tribune published an updated account of the incident involving a Chicago firefighter who was shot by police. According to authorities, the off-duty firefighter was seen jumping out of a car and appeared to point a weapon at officers in a store parking lot in the Mount Greenwood neighborhood.

The man was reportedly in a shooting stance, holding a dark object in his hand, when he was shot around 12:45 PM at a CVS pharmacy located at 103rd and Pulaski Road. However, it later turned out that the object was actually his wallet, according to Patrick Camden, a spokesperson for the Fraternal Order of Police.

The firefighter was rushed to Advocate Christ Medical Center in critical condition and underwent surgery. Initially, officials had reported that he had died, but later updates indicated that his condition was stable. Earlier statements from officials suggested that the firefighter had opened fire on responding officers after being called to the scene due to a report of a man threatening suicide.

According to Camden, the firefighter's wife had contacted police earlier, expressing concern about his mental state and noting that he had access to a gun. The firefighter was on medical leave and had previously shown signs of depression, Camden added.

Police were initially told the firefighter was either at a pharmacy on 111th Street or 103rd Street. When they couldn't find him at the first location, they went to the CVS on 103rd Street, where they found him in the driver’s seat of his car, talking on the phone. Officers asked him to show his hands and exit the vehicle.

Camden said the man made the sign of the cross, opened the door, and jumped out with his hands in a "combat position," holding a dark object that looked like a gun. No weapon was found at the scene, though one was later recovered at his home.

Records show the firefighter is also a paramedic and lives just two miles away from the location of the incident.

Earlier, at 2:27 PM, the Chicago Tribune had reported that a Chicago Fire Department employee was shot and killed by police after opening fire on officers responding to a report of a man threatening suicide. Officials confirmed that the man worked for the Chicago Fire Department and that the incident occurred at a CVS Pharmacy at 3951 W. 103rd St.

The man was taken to the hospital in critical condition and later died, according to both the Fire Department and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Thanks, Dennis.
