Multi-vehicle, multi-victim MVA in Wheeling 3-28-13 (pt 2)

Deputy Chief Drew Smith has provided an update regarding the multi-vehicle accident that occurred last week on Palatine Road:

Prospect Heights and Wheeling Fire Departments have a coordinated response for incidents along Palatine Road. A unified command system is in place to ensure a fast and effective response, regardless of jurisdiction. The road runs east-west for three miles through the area, and it crosses between the two towns multiple times—sometimes serving as a border or passing through one town and then the other. There are also four bridges along the route, with only three interchanges for access.

When the RED Center receives a 9-1-1 call about an incident, both departments are dispatched simultaneously, with each unit approaching from opposite directions. This ensures that if traffic blocks one side, the other department can still reach the scene quickly. Once a unit arrives on site, the exact location is confirmed, and additional apparatus can be sent or returned accordingly.

If the incident is reported as a "pin-in" (a vehicle trapped or involved in a serious collision), extrication units should stage before entering Palatine Road and wait for the first responding unit to confirm the best approach. I’ve attached a map showing the three grids and the entry points for each company.

For a pin-in incident, units such as PH E39 or Square 9, along with Wheeling E24 and the Wheeling squad or truck, should be staged. Additionally, both Prospect Heights and Wheeling chiefs should be notified and on standby.

Attached is a map illustrating the grid system used during joint responses on Palatine Road.
