Several Problems in the Design of Fire Pump Adapter

The main purpose of a fire pump adapter is to allow a fire truck to draw water from an outdoor fire hydrant and deliver it into the building’s internal fire water supply system when the fire pump inside the building fails or there isn't enough water available. Drawing from my experience in fire protection design, I'd like to share some key considerations for setting up pump adapters. First, pump adapters should be installed within each fire zone according to the "high regulation" requirement. In the past, buildings over 50 meters were considered out of reach for fire trucks, and pump adapters weren’t required. However, with modern high-powered fire engines now capable of reaching much higher elevations, the 50-meter limit is no longer a valid criterion for determining where to install these devices. When a fire protection system is vertically divided, it's sometimes possible to merge pump adapters between zones. However, placing them before a pressure-reducing valve can artificially lower the pressure, which may lead to insufficient water pressure on certain floors—this is not ideal during a fire. In my view, low-zone pump adapters should be placed after the pressure-reducing valve to avoid overpressure issues. With proper system design, the low-pressure network can be set to 1.6 MPa or 2.5 MPa, matching the pump capacity of most city fire trucks (which typically range from 1.12–1.37 MPa). Using check valves between zones can also prevent high-pressure areas from affecting low-pressure ones. Second, when designing a self-priming fire suppression system, the pump adapter can be directly connected to the wet alarm valve. This allows the fire truck to immediately supply water once it arrives, without needing to trigger additional alarms or restart the fire pump, saving critical time during an emergency. Third, the distance between the pump adapter and the fire tank should be between 15–40 meters, as per fire codes. The same applies to the distance between the pump adapter and the outdoor fire hydrant or fire pond. Fire ponds should store all indoor and outdoor firewater, unless there's a reliable municipal water supply that can supplement it. Outdoor hydrants are secondary backup, so ensuring the pump adapter is within 15–40 meters of the water source is essential. Also, considering the turning radius of fire trucks, pump adapters shouldn't be too close together to avoid interference. For example, if each adapter needs 10–15 L/s and the building requires 40 L/s, five adapters may be needed, but spacing them appropriately can be challenging. To address this, I recommend installing a dedicated loop pipe outside the building, equipped with outdoor hydrants. Each hydrant should be no more than 40 meters from the fire pond or intake. If the municipal water supply is damaged, the hydrants can still function, allowing fire trucks to take water and relay it through the pump adapters. A backflow prevention valve should also be installed to protect the municipal system from contamination. Fourth, the number of outdoor fire hydrants should correspond to the number of pump adapters. Each hydrant provides 10–15 L/s, while each pump adapter is sized based on the total indoor fire demand, including both hydrants and sprinkler systems. If the indoor demand exceeds the outdoor supply, the hydrants may not be sufficient during a system failure. Therefore, it's important to ensure that the number of hydrants matches the number of pump adapters. Ideally, there should be at least two water intakes to reduce the number of hydrants needed. Lastly, safety valves should be installed in the fire protection system to prevent overpressure. If the fire pump fails or only a small amount of water is used initially, sudden activation of the system could cause dangerous pressure spikes. Installing a safety valve with the pump adapter helps maintain system integrity and prevents damage to pipes and equipment. In summary, proper placement and design of pump adapters are crucial for effective fire suppression. They must be strategically located, properly sized, and integrated with other fire protection systems to ensure maximum efficiency and safety.

Card Material PVC

Polyvinyl chloride plastic is a polymer formed by free radical polymerization of vinyl chloride monomer. The English name is polyviny chloride, or PVC for short.
PVC is one of the largest plastic products in the world. It is cheap and widely used. PVC resin is white or light yellow powder. Different additives can be added according to different purposes, and PVC plastics can present different physical and mechanical properties. Adding an appropriate amount of plasticizer to the polyvinyl chloride resin can make a variety of hard, soft and transparent products. PVC can be divided into soft PVC and hard PVC. Soft PVC is generally used for floors, ceilings and leather surfaces, but because soft PVC contains softeners (this is also the difference between soft PVC and hard PVC), it is easy to become brittle and difficult to store, so its scope of use is limited. Rigid PVC does not contain softeners, so it has good flexibility, easy forming, not brittle, non-toxic and pollution-free, and has a long storage time, so it has great development and application value. The essence of PVC is a kind of vacuum blister film, which is used for the surface packaging of various panels, so it is also called decorative film and adhesive film, which is used in building materials, packaging, medicine and many other industries. Among them, the building materials industry accounts for the largest proportion at 60%, followed by the packaging industry, and there are several other small-scale applications. According to the molecular weight, PVC can be divided into two types: general-purpose type and high-polymerization type. Our commonly used PVC resins are all universal.
