5-Alarm fire in Peru (IL)
Firegeezer.com has been closely following a major fire that broke out around midnight at the former Wextclox watch and clock factory complex in Peru, Illinois—located 100 miles southwest of Chicago. According to reports, the massive structure, which spans 44 buildings over a 2-block by 4-block area in downtown Peru, was engulfed in flames and remained uncontrolled well into the morning. As a precaution, nearby homes were evacuated, and local firefighters described the blaze as "very large," with units from multiple departments responding to the scene.
The Washington Post National published an article with photos, detailing that two teenagers—one 15 years old from Peru and the other 17 from La Salle—were charged with aggravated arson. The older teen, who is being treated as an adult, appeared in court and was given a $250,000 bond. According to police chief Doug Bernabei, the teens reportedly entered the building, poured gasoline from a container they found there onto a boat inside, set it on fire, and then fled. A tip from an anonymous caller led authorities to the suspects.
The fire caused propane tanks to explode, prompting a mandatory evacuation of nearby homes. However, by 11 a.m., most residents were allowed to return. Some were still kept away due to smoke drifting directly toward their homes. One firefighter from LaSalle was injured and underwent surgery early Monday.
