First non-food fuel ethanol project at the end of the trial run

According to recent reports from the National Development and Reform Commission's Industry Department, the first non-food fuel ethanol project approved during China's "Eleventh Five-Year Plan" period—Guangxi Zhongyin Biomass Energy Co., Ltd.—has reached a crucial stage. The project, which produces 200,000 tons of cassava-based fuel ethanol annually, has completed its overall civil engineering work and is now in the final phase of preparation for trial production. It is expected to begin operations by the end of this year. This initiative aligns with the national energy strategy, supports the expansion of ethanol gasoline usage, and represents an important step in exploring non-food-based fuel ethanol solutions. The first phase of the project required a total investment of 750 million yuan. It includes dedicated railway lines, advanced production facilities, a self-powered power station, and a large-scale wastewater treatment system. The project employs clean technologies such as medium-temperature cooking, continuous fermentation, differential pressure distillation, and pressure swing adsorption. In addition to producing 200,000 tons of fuel ethanol each year, it also generates 50,000 tons of fiber feed, 29.7 million cubic meters of biogas, and 50,000 tons of carbon dioxide. Construction began in December 2006, and currently, all major equipment in the alcohol plant—such as liquefaction, fermentation, dehydration, and separation systems—is already in place. The finished product storage area is fully equipped, and 69% of the external pipeline network has been completed. Installation of pre-fabricated equipment, the power station, water treatment systems, and electrical instrumentation is ongoing. Based on the project timeline, trial production is anticipated to start by the end of this year.
