First non-food fuel ethanol project at the end of the trial run

According to recent reports from the National Development and Reform Commission's Industry Department, the first non-food fuel ethanol project approved during China's "Eleventh Five-Year Plan" period—Guangxi Zhongyin Biomass Energy Co., Ltd.—has reached a major milestone. The project, which produces 200,000 tons of cassava-based fuel ethanol annually, has completed its overall civil engineering work. It is now in the final stage of construction, with plans to begin trial production by the end of this year. This initiative aligns with national energy strategies, the expansion of ethanol gasoline usage, and efforts to explore sustainable alternatives to traditional fuel sources. As part of the country’s broader push for clean energy, the project represents a significant step forward in utilizing non-food biomass for fuel production. The first phase of the project has seen an investment of 750 million yuan. It includes dedicated railway lines, advanced fuel ethanol production facilities, self-generated power stations, and large-scale wastewater treatment systems. The facility employs eco-friendly production technologies such as medium-temperature cooking, continuous fermentation, differential pressure distillation, and pressure swing adsorption. In terms of output, the plant is expected to produce 200,000 tons of fuel ethanol annually, along with 50,000 tons of fiber feed, 29.7 million cubic meters of biogas, and 50,000 tons of carbon dioxide. These byproducts contribute to a more circular and sustainable energy system. Construction of the project began in December 2006. Currently, the main alcohol plant is undergoing key processes such as liquefaction, fermentation, dehydration, and separation. All equipment at the finished product storage area is already in place, and external pipeline installation is 69% complete. Meanwhile, pre-installation work, power station construction, water treatment, and electrical instrumentation are ongoing. With the project on track, it is expected that the facility will start trial operations by the end of the year, marking a key achievement in China’s renewable energy development. This project not only supports environmental sustainability but also strengthens the local economy through job creation and technological advancement.
