The calcium carbide industry has achieved remarkable results in three years of rectification

In a recent interview with reporters, officials from the National Development and Reform Commission and the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Association revealed that a three-year campaign to regulate and improve the calcium carbide industry has yielded significant results. The initiative has successfully curbed pollution and upgraded production standards. Open-type calcium carbide furnaces and small-scale units below 5,000 KVA have been largely phased out, effectively eliminating the so-called "Black Triangle" regions that once plagued areas like Shanxi, Shaanxi, and Inner Mongolia. In their place, large-scale sealed furnaces are now becoming the norm, marking a shift toward more sustainable and environmentally friendly practices. This latest round of special rectification is the most comprehensive in the industry's history. Starting in January 2005, the National Development and Reform Commission introduced the "Conditions for Access to the Calcium Carbide Industry," setting strict entry requirements. In May 2006, seven key government departments, including the State Environmental Protection Administration and the State Electricity Regulatory Commission, issued a circular aimed at accelerating structural adjustments in the sector. More recently, the central government has intensified its oversight of differential electricity pricing policies, canceling local preferential rates that previously favored outdated producers. These measures have significantly raised the cost of operating inefficient facilities, forcing over 70% of outdated production units to exit the market. According to insiders, the domestic calcium carbide industry has undergone three notable improvements following these reforms. First, the environmental degradation caused by uncontrolled small-scale production has been largely eliminated, and many companies have adopted advanced technologies such as dry bag dust collection, closed-loop cooling systems, and automated furnace controls. Second, open-type and small-scale furnaces with capacities under 5,000 KVA have been nearly eliminated, removing over 2 million tons of outdated production capacity. Today, more than 80% of total industry capacity comes from furnaces with a single unit size of 12,500 KVA or larger. Third, leading companies are investing in large, energy-efficient, and eco-friendly enclosed furnaces. Major players like Hubei Yihua, Inner Mongolia Junzheng, and Xinjiang Tianye have already upgraded their facilities accordingly. Officials from the National Development and Reform Commission emphasized the need to sustain the progress made so far and continue promoting healthy development through energy conservation and emission reduction. They also announced that revisions to the 2004 "Entry Conditions for the Calcium Carbide Industry" are underway, aiming to raise industry standards further. New guidelines are being coordinated across multiple ministries, while efforts are also accelerating to establish energy consumption limits, clean production standards, and evaluation systems for the calcium carbide sector. These steps signal a long-term commitment to a greener and more sustainable future for the industry.
