The calcium carbide industry has achieved remarkable results in three years of rectification
In a recent interview with reporters, officials from the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) and the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Association revealed that a three-year special regulatory campaign targeting the calcium carbide industry has yielded significant results. The measures have effectively curbed pollution, with outdated open-type furnaces and small-scale units below 5,000 KVA largely phased out. As a result, the so-called "Black Triangle" regions—once plagued by uncontrolled small-scale production—have disappeared, while large, sealed calcium carbide furnaces are now gaining traction across the country.
This round of special rectification is considered one of the most comprehensive in the industry's history. In January 2005, the NDRC introduced the "Conditions for Access to the Calcium Carbide Industry," setting strict entry requirements. Then, in May 2006, seven government departments, including the NDRC and the State Environmental Protection Administration, issued a circular aimed at accelerating structural adjustments in the sector. This year, the central government has intensified its oversight, strictly enforcing differential electricity pricing policies and eliminating local preferential rates. These actions have significantly raised the costs for outdated production facilities, which previously accounted for over 70% of total costs, forcing many to exit the market.
According to recent reports, the domestic calcium carbide industry has undergone three major positive transformations. First, the "Black Triangle" regions in areas like Shanxi, Shaanxi, and Inner Mongolia no longer exist due to the elimination of unregulated small-scale operations. More companies are now adopting advanced environmental technologies, such as dry bag dust collection, closed-loop cooling systems, and automated furnace controls. Second, open-type and small-scale furnaces under 5,000 KVA have been largely removed, resulting in the elimination of over 2 million tons of outdated production capacity. Currently, more than 80% of the industry’s total capacity comes from single furnaces of 12,500 KVA or larger. Third, qualified enterprises are investing in large, energy-efficient, and environmentally friendly enclosed furnaces. Companies like Hubei Yihua, Inner Mongolia Junzheng, and Xinjiang Tianye have already begun using these advanced facilities.
Officials from the NDRC emphasized the need to maintain the progress made so far and continue driving the industry toward sustainable development through energy conservation and emission reduction. The government is currently revising the 2004 "Entry Conditions for the Calcium Carbide Industry" to raise the industry's access standards. New guidelines are being finalized by multiple ministries, and efforts are underway to establish stricter energy consumption limits, clean production standards, and evaluation systems for the calcium carbide sector. These steps reflect a long-term commitment to improving both environmental performance and industrial efficiency.
