Stockton Fire Station damaged by fire

Excerpts from the JournalStandard.com:

Stockton firefighters are currently evaluating the extent of the damage after their unoccupied firehouse caught fire on Thursday morning, causing significant destruction to the building and its contents. According to Stockton Police Chief LaDon Trost, the fire was reported around 11 a.m. and was fully extinguished by 1:30 p.m.

Some equipment, including a large tanker truck, was stored in a nearby building across the street. However, all the department's air packs were located in the burning structure, preventing firefighters from entering the main station. Despite this, they managed to control the fire until additional crews arrived from neighboring departments.

Authorities suspect the fire originated from a piece of equipment inside a pull-behind trailer, as stated by Trost. The incident has raised concerns about the safety of equipment storage and emergency preparedness at the station.

Excerpts from THonline.com:

Dressed in casual attire, Stockton firefighters found themselves facing a blaze that struck their very home base. A witness reported seeing smoke rising from the village’s fire station around 11 a.m., prompting immediate action from local volunteer firefighters.

Within minutes, crews from nearby agencies arrived to assist in saving the headquarters of the Stockton Fire Department. Fortunately, no one was injured, according to Fire Chief Randy Baysinger. However, the fire is expected to result in hundreds of thousands of dollars in damages to critical firefighting equipment.

Baysinger suggested the fire likely started due to an electrical malfunction in one of the department’s trailers. That trailer was completely destroyed, along with one of the department’s front-line engines. Several other vehicles sustained major damage.

Firefighters from Stockton, Pearl City, Scales Mound, Elizabeth, Warren, Lena, and Apple River all responded to the scene. Baysinger emphasized that despite the damage, the department will still be able to serve the community. Neighboring departments have offered to lend their equipment to ensure continued emergency response capabilities.
