Police officers and firefighters collect water for residents of Flint, MI

Excerpts from the DailyHerald.com:

Residents from the suburbs are stepping up to support those impacted by the ongoing water crisis in Flint, Michigan. A growing initiative led by the Buffalo Grove Police Department has seen an overwhelming response, with residents donating bottled water at seven local fire departments serving as drop-off points. These locations include Arlington Heights, Grayslake, Round Lake, Schiller Park, Lake Zurich, North Riverside, and Utica.

The effort aims to provide much-needed safe drinking water to Flint’s police and firefighters, who have been working tirelessly to assist their community. Donations of bottled water are being accepted 24/7 until 6 p.m. on Friday at the Buffalo Grove Police Headquarters, located at 46 Raupp Blvd. So far, the Arlington Heights Fire Department has already collected 100 cases and delivered them to Buffalo Grove, according to firefighter Andrew Larson.

Buffalo Grove Deputy Police Chief Roy Bethge estimates that at least 2,000 cases of water will be sent to Flint. Originally, off-duty officers planned to transport the supplies using a regular truck, but due to the high volume of donations, officials are now seeking a volunteer semi-truck for the delivery. Meanwhile, Grayslake Fire Chief John Christian said their department has been receiving a constant flow of donations since the campaign began on Monday.

Flint has been dealing with the lead contamination crisis since last year, when elevated levels of lead were found in its water supply. Now, communities across the country are rallying to help, sending bottled water and other essential supplies to the city.

In addition to the fire department efforts, the Lake County Housing Authority is also collecting bottled water and funds to support residents of the Flint Housing Commission. The authority is accepting donations of water and checks through Thursday, February 4, at 33928 N. Route 45, just outside Grayslake. Donations can be made from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursdays, Fridays, Mondays, and Tuesdays. On Wednesday, February 3, they’ll accept drop-offs from 8 a.m. to noon, and again on Thursday, February 4, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Checks should be made payable to the Lake County Housing Authority with “Flint Water” noted in the memo line, as explained by Northern, a spokesperson for the organization.
