Glenview Police and Fire to access high school surveillance in emergencies

The Trib Local recently published an article detailing a new agreement between the Village of Glenview and Glenbrook South High School, allowing emergency responders to access live video surveillance during critical incidents.

Under a deal approved by the Glenbrook District 225 school board on January 13, police officers, firefighters, and paramedics from Glenview will be able to view live footage from the high school’s security cameras during emergencies. According to village spokesperson Lynne Stiefel, the Glenview village board will also need to approve the agreement, though she wasn’t sure when that would happen.

The agreement grants village officials the authority to use the cameras during emergencies, but they are required to provide a written explanation to the school superintendent within 24 hours of activating the system. School Superintendent Mike Riggle emphasized that the cameras can only be used for training or emergency situations—not for regular police investigations.

Village officials will have full discretion over when the surveillance system is useful for first responders. According to the document, an emergency is defined as any situation that poses an imminent threat to students, staff, or anyone in a District 225 facility. This includes events like hostage situations, fires, terrorism, the use of firearms, or health emergencies.

"When something happens at a school, it's always a safety concern," Riggle said. "We want to look at all the resources we have available to help first responders."

The agreement also extends to cameras at Glenbrook Off Campus and Glenbrook Evening High School, located at 1835 Landwehr Road. While the District 225 office at 3801 W. Lake Ave. currently doesn’t have cameras, village officials could gain access if the district installs them in the future, according to Riggle.

Riggle mentioned that Northbrook officials are interested in establishing a similar agreement for Glenbrook North High School, but that would require separate action from the school board.

Glenbrook South High School has had security cameras in public areas—such as entryways, hallways, and cafeterias—for the past five years. They are not installed in bathrooms or classrooms, Riggle noted. The system operates as a passive surveillance setup, meaning the cameras run continuously but are not actively monitored. Instead, school staff review footage after incidents occur.

"Anything that helps improve student and staff safety is definitely worth the effort," he said in a statement.

Thanks, Dan
