New fire station for Elburn FPD (more)

On Monday morning, fire trucks rolled into the brand-new Elburn and Countryside Fire Protection District station on Route 38 in Elburn. After 14 months of construction and years of planning, this state-of-the-art facility, located just east of Route 47 and north of Route 38, officially opened its doors for the first time. Assistant Fire Chief Tate Haley has been at the helm of this project and shared some insights about what makes this station unique.
Compared to the previous station on 210 E. North St. in Elburn, this new building is significantly larger. The district serves areas beyond Elburn, including the Mill Creek subdivision, and Elburn's population is projected to grow as development progresses in the station's vicinity. Funding for the project was entirely covered by the department without any need for additional public funds. Initial cost estimates ranged from $8 million to $10 million, and according to Haley, the final price tag was close to $10 million.
An open house is scheduled for December 13, giving residents a chance to explore the station's cutting-edge features. This event will also showcase expanded displays and educational areas that were previously only brought out for special occasions like the annual Christmas Stroll.
The station boasts three floors. The main floor contains offices, boardrooms, training spaces, and a fully-equipped kitchen. Downstairs, there's a modern fitness room, replacing the outdated space in the former ambulance building. This level also houses an emergency operations center and a spacious boardroom for training purposes. Additionally, there will be a small museum featuring historical items like an old fire wheel that was previously tucked away in storage.
Upstairs, the living quarters include 15 bunk beds, a multipurpose room, and a private patio. Instead of a traditional fire pole, firefighters now descend to the apparatus bay via a fun spiral slide. Adjacent to the station, a training tower offers versatile uses, including hose drying and practicing rescue techniques in confined spaces.
This new facility not only enhances operational efficiency but also provides a welcoming environment for community engagement and safety education. As the Elburn and Countryside Fire Protection District continues to grow, this station stands as a testament to their commitment to excellence and service.
