Ian Wright Pushes Turbo Electric Garbage Truck

Turbine engines are the best technology choice for jet aircraft. With their small, lightweight kits, these engines provide superpower support for aircraft. Wright is the co-founder of Tesla Motors. He left the Tesla and founded Wrightspeed. He wanted to create a high-performance electric sports car, and even created a concept X1, which is in 3 seconds. Speed ​​up to 60 mph. However, Wright realized that he could make greater technological innovations, and he chose to target garbage trucks full of diesel smoke and odors. Since garbage trucks are the most common type of vehicles, they can be seen after getting up every day and have a great market potential.

Garbage trucks are indeed a headache, they will have a negative impact on the environment. As they walk through the city, they make the entire city smoky. Therefore, Wright decided to develop a new electric power drive system to solve the problems of traditional garbage trucks. When the battery power is low, the turbine starts to rotate, and after the fuel (diesel) is burned, it generates electricity for the vehicle to continue driving. The motor is coupled to the wheels, making the system more similar to a transmission that has been using hybrid engines for many years.

Wright believes that the above configuration will be far better than the six-cylinder in-line diesel engines and heavy-duty transmissions currently installed in garbage trucks. He said: "If users want to use clean energy equipment, then it needs to make more adjustments."

With a weight of 66,000 pounds, this type of truck does not excel in short-range racing, but its innovative drive system can reduce diesel energy consumption by 70%. In addition, this type of electric vehicle has a power of 400 horsepower and an increase in engine torque of 40%. Its electric motor also acts as a generator, recovering electrical energy when the vehicle is running slowly. This model is equivalent to an enhanced version of the Toyota Prius model, which provides a retarding force of 1,000 horsepower. This may be the value needed to start and stop a heavily loaded garbage truck.

With an overnight charge, you can drive 20 miles before you start the turbine engine, which weighs only 250 pounds, which is equivalent to one-tenth the weight of other engines of equal power. The weight is “featherweight”. If you are still worried about noise problems, then you really have to worry about: Such trucks run on electricity most of the time, even when the turbine engine is started, and the noise of the vehicle is much lower than that of diesel trucks.

This sounds good, but it left traces of flaws after the vehicle had adopted a turbine engine. Chrysler Motors had planned to use turbine engines in its cars in the 1960s and 1970s, but the plan was aborted twice. Like the high-end sports car owned by Lutes, despite the fast speed, it is not too reliable. Other car manufacturers have considered adopting small turbine engines to increase their trips, but they all ended in failure because the performance improvement was not very good.

But for trucks, turbine engines are just right. They are simpler to build than reciprocating engines and can be used with almost all flammable liquids. (Chrysler says its vehicles are suitable for all types of liquid fuels, from peanut oil to flavors. Can be used, but Wrightspeed plans to use the simplest of diesel or natural gas. Combustion continues at high temperatures, which means that the fuel can be essentially burned out and almost pollution-free. Wright said: "The exhaust gas is relatively clean, even to an incredible point, and there is no need for any secondary treatment because the exhaust emissions of the user's vehicle can meet California's relevant emission standards."

Wrightspeed's turbine drive systems, batteries and motors are matched to conventional diesel engines, gearboxes, differentials and two bearings, leaving plenty of room for equipment. The company also provides kits to retrofit existing trucks to match new equipment or to provide new cars directly.

FedEx (FedEx Express) ordered 25 garbage trucks and the company has already delivered 2 vehicles. The first Mack LR garbage truck that has been modified and completed is urgently delivered. Wrightspeed will not disclose the price for the time being, but some people estimate that the model is priced at around $200,000. The turbine should be able to operate for 10,000 hours and then need to be overhauled, but the above price does not include maintenance costs and fuel costs.

The United States currently has about 150,000 garbage trucks, and the provision of turbines for vehicles will make this type of vehicle enter a new era. We have been looking forward to achieving this goal since the 1960s. But even so, its performance is by no means a predecessor's imagination.
