Diesel engine is a realistic choice for China to realize energy-saving and environmentally friendly cars

On November 28, Chen Qingtai, the deputy director of the Development Research Center of the State Council, addressed the China Automotive Industry Summit Forum hosted by China Europe International Business School. He called on the industry to consider advanced diesel engines as a practical and effective solution for energy-efficient and environmentally friendly vehicles. Chen pointed out that while China has long focused on developing energy-saving and new-energy automotive technologies, there has been a growing emphasis on electric and hybrid vehicles from a technological advancement perspective. Meanwhile, efforts to improve gasoline and diesel engines have been overlooked, despite the fact that stricter fuel efficiency and emission standards are pushing for continuous upgrades in engine technology. He expressed concern that relevant authorities may not be fully aware of China’s significant progress in advanced diesel technology over the past 15 years. “It seems that advanced diesel technology is being sidelined in the broader strategy for energy-saving vehicle development,” Chen said. “Many cities have imposed blanket restrictions on diesel vehicles, which has dampened manufacturers’ enthusiasm for further research and development in this area.” In reality, China has made remarkable strides in diesel technology. Compared to gasoline vehicles, modern diesel engines offer up to 20–30% better fuel efficiency and stronger performance. By 2005, particulate emissions from diesel cars had dropped by 91% compared to 1990 levels. These advancements have also eliminated many of the traditional issues associated with diesel vehicles, such as black smoke and excessive vibration. With rising concerns about energy security and environmental impact, Chen argued that a more balanced approach should be taken, recognizing the role of diesel technology alongside electric and hybrid options. He urged policymakers to reconsider their stance and support the continued innovation in diesel engine technology.
