Diesel engine is a realistic choice for China to realize energy-saving and environmentally friendly cars

On November 28, Chen Qingtai, Deputy Director of the Development Research Center of the State Council, addressed the China Automotive Industry Summit Forum hosted by China Europe International Business School. He called for a more balanced approach to energy-efficient and environmentally friendly vehicle technologies, emphasizing that advanced diesel engines should be considered a practical and viable option in China’s automotive strategy. Chen pointed out that although China has long been focused on developing energy-saving and new-energy vehicle technologies, there has been a strong emphasis on electric and hybrid vehicles from a technological standpoint. However, he argued that this focus has led to less attention being given to improving traditional internal combustion engines, particularly gasoline and diesel engines, through stricter fuel efficiency and emission standards. He noted that many relevant authorities seem unaware of the significant progress China has made in diesel engine technology over the past 15 years. “Advanced diesel technology has been overlooked in the broader energy-saving technology roadmap,” Chen said. “Many cities have imposed blanket restrictions on diesel vehicles entering urban areas, which has discouraged manufacturers from investing in diesel innovation.” In reality, China has made remarkable strides in diesel technology. Compared to gasoline vehicles, modern diesel cars offer 20% to 30% better fuel efficiency and superior performance. By 2005, particulate emissions from diesel vehicles had dropped by 91% compared to 1990 levels. These advancements have also eliminated the problems of black smoke and vibration that once plagued traditional diesel engines, making them cleaner and more reliable than ever before. Chen’s remarks highlight the need for a more inclusive and forward-thinking approach to vehicle technology development, one that recognizes the role of diesel engines in achieving energy efficiency and environmental goals.
