Chicago Still & Box Alarm fire, 11-01-14
Saturday afternoon around 4:30 PM, I received this update from Eric Haak regarding a fire incident in Chicago's Bridgeport neighborhood. It happened on the 1100 block of West 31st Street. The 15th Battalion responded to reports of smoke coming from the roof of a laundromat. According to witnesses who were present, roofers had been working on the building just before the fire broke out.
The firefighters initially launched an aggressive interior attack but had to terminate it when they realized the roof supports were starting to give way. Eric has shared some photos of the firefighting efforts, showing the four engines that were actively involved in pumping water onto the flames. Engine 28 and Engine 39 were the first to arrive and were positioned in front of the building. Engine 8 and Engine 29 also joined the operation later. Trucks 8 and 4 acted as the still trucks, while Tower Ladder 5 arrived on the scene as backup. Truck 33 served as the Rapid Intervention Team (RIT).
Attached are several images captured by Eric Haak. The first photo shows firefighters with pike poles at the fire scene, ready to break through any obstacles. The next set of images highlights different engines—Engine 39, Engine 8, and Engine 29—each contributing to the firefighting efforts. There’s also a picture of Engine 28, another key player in the operation. In one image, you can see firefighters wielding a hose line, demonstrating their determination to control the situation. Another shot captures a snorkel vehicle hard at work, assisting in accessing hard-to-reach areas of the blaze.
As someone following the events closely, I’m impressed by how coordinated and efficient the Chicago Fire Department was during this incident. These photos really bring the intensity of the situation to life, highlighting the bravery and skill of those involved. It’s moments like these that remind us of the dedication firefighters show every day, often putting themselves in harm's way to protect others.
