Chicago Still & Box Alarm fire, 7-2-15

This message comes from Eric Haak, who shared some compelling photos from a still and box alarm incident in Chicago that occurred just after 4:00 PM on Thursday, July 2nd. The structure involved was located on the 500 block of South Millard and was an abandoned "Red X" building. Battalion Chief 13 reported seeing a significant amount of smoke billowing from the second floor and expressed concerns about communication with the "D" side exposure, which was another three-story vacant building nearby. My photographs were taken roughly 45 minutes into the response. Engine Company 38 was actively pumping water from Central Park and Congress, while Tower Ladder 14 was operating in sector "C." Attached are several images showcasing different aspects of this firefighting operation. The first photo captures a Chicago Fire Department squad unit at the scene, providing an overview of the initial setup. Another image shows a firefighter inside the Snorkel basket, ready to assist with any overhead work or access points needed during the incident. There’s also a striking shot of firefighters working with a hose line at the fire scene, highlighting their coordinated efforts to control the blaze. Further along, you'll see Engine 44 in action, its presence essential for delivering critical water resources to the frontlines. Another photo gives us a broader view of multiple fire trucks working collaboratively at the site, emphasizing teamwork among various units. Additionally, there’s an image featuring a fire investigator present at the scene, underscoring the importance of determining the cause of the fire once it is safe to do so. Lastly, Engine 95 is captured in one of the final shots, completing the visual narrative of how these professionals responded efficiently under challenging conditions. These visuals offer a glimpse into the intense yet methodical process of managing such incidents, where precision and cooperation are paramount for both safety and effectiveness. Each photo tells part of the story behind this particular event, illustrating not only the scale but also the dedication of those involved in protecting our communities.
