LAS VEGAS – (BUSINESS WIRE) – At its annual user conference, Autodesk University, Autodesk, Inc. (NASDAQ:ADSK) unveiled a new cloud-based solution tailored for the construction industry: Autodesk BIM 360 Docs. This platform offers a centralized virtual workspace where teams can create, access, manage, annotate, and share 2D and 3D project documents, plans, and models—all in one place.

According to a 2013 report by Autodesk titled “Making the Grade,” up to 25% of construction work involves rework, and about 10% of materials are wasted. Much of this inefficiency stems from managing large volumes of project documents, which are often scattered across multiple platforms. Today’s construction projects face significant challenges due to fragmented document management systems, leading to delays, errors, and increased costs.

Previously known as Project Alexandria, BIM 360 Docs is designed to streamline workflows, reduce errors, and save time. The tool ensures that all team members are working with the most up-to-date versions of plans and documents, improving collaboration and reducing costly mistakes.

“Autodesk is redefining how construction projects are managed,” said Amar Hanspal, Senior Vice President of Products at Autodesk. “A comprehensive solution like this has been long overdue. The industry has been waiting for something that actually works, and we believe BIM 360 Docs is the step forward it needs.”

BIM 360 Docs allows real-time collaboration among project stakeholders throughout the entire lifecycle of a construction project. Key features include:

  • Seamless integration between 3D models and 2D views, enabling users to switch between formats effortlessly;
  • Secure access controls and approval workflows to ensure only the latest documents are used;
  • Fast and optimized viewing of large PDFs on Apple iOS devices;
  • Automated organization of documents with advanced OCR for title blocks and improved accuracy.

Industry leaders from various sectors, including architects, engineers, general contractors, and building owners, contributed feedback during the development of BIM 360 Docs. Their insights helped shape the final product, ensuring it meets real-world needs.

“Document management has always been a pain point in construction,” said Jason Reece, Technology and Innovation Improvement Lead at Balfour Beatty Construction. “We’ve worked closely with Autodesk on this, and what we’ve seen so far shows great promise. This could be the integrated solution the industry has been missing for years.”

Autodesk is now accepting reservations for a limited release and free preview of BIM 360 Docs at www.bim360.com/docs. The full version is expected to launch in early 2016. A free, basic version will be available, with optional paid subscriptions offering more advanced capabilities. Initially, the platform will only support English.
