China has emerged as a global leader in the plastics industry, with its plastics processing machinery output ranking first worldwide and synthetic resin production standing at second place globally. The country's apparent plastic consumption accounts for one-fifth of the world’s total, making it an essential player in the global "plastic value chain." This growing influence has drawn significant attention from international industry players.
These insights were shared at the 22nd China International Plastics and Rubber Industry Exhibition held in Shanghai. Liao Zhenyuan, a representative from the China Plastics Processing Industry Association, highlighted that over the past ten years, the country's plastics sector has experienced steady and substantial growth, driven by the stable development of the national economy. The industry now ranks third in total output within the light industry and fifth in exports, solidifying its role as a key pillar of the national economy.
Dr. Hong Dingyi, deputy director of the Science and Technology Committee at China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation, emphasized the scale of the "plastic value chain," which includes synthetic resin manufacturers, distributors, plastic press producers, processors, product distributors, and end users. He noted that China holds a position comparable to that of the United States in this chain. In 2007 alone, sales of the top five general-purpose synthetic resins exceeded 300 billion yuan, while plastic product sales approached 600 billion yuan.
This strong global presence has attracted international attention. The 2008 International Plastics and Rubber Exhibition in Beijing brought together over 1,700 domestic and overseas suppliers, featuring major industry players. Exhibitors from Austria, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK, the U.S., and Taiwan set up pavilions in Shanghai to explore new business opportunities.
Zhu Yulun, chairman of Yale Exhibition Service Co., Ltd., one of the event organizers, stated that the 22nd China International Rubber and Plastics Exhibition is currently ranked first in Asia and third globally among similar events. This year’s theme, “Integrating Life and Accomplishing Business Opportunities,†highlights the expanding role of plastics and rubber in everyday life, reflecting their increasing importance across multiple industries.
