New (used) heavy rescue with crane for Newport FPD

Bill Friedrich recently shared some interesting news: the Newport Fire Protection District (FPD) in Lake County has acquired a 1985 Mack MR/Saulsbury walk-in heavy rescue unit equipped with a mid-ship mounted 8-ton, 33-foot National Crane. The apparatus was previously operated by the Lutherville Volunteer Fire Company in Baltimore County, Maryland. While the unit hasn’t arrived in Illinois yet, it’s expected to be transported soon. The Lutherville squad, known as Squad 303, had used this particular truck for many years before replacing it in 2008 with a new Pierce Velocity heavy rescue. The old Mack was painted in a classic white with gold striping and a black bottom band, giving it a distinctive look that was typical of fire departments back then. This crane-equipped unit was a vital part of Lutherville’s fleet, especially during extrication operations where lifting or stabilizing vehicles was necessary. The crane's capabilities were well-documented, with photos showing its use in real-life scenarios. One image even appeared in the book *Cranes in Action* by MBI Publishing, highlighting the importance of such equipment in emergency response. Now, after nearly four decades of service, the Mack is being passed on to a new department, continuing its legacy in another part of the country. It’s always fascinating to see how fire apparatus evolves over time, and how older units find new homes and purposes in different communities. The transition from the Mack to the newer Pierce model shows how technology and needs have changed, but the core mission of saving lives remains the same.
