New Schiller Park engine
Schiller Park's Division 20 recently welcomed a brand-new Impel engine from Pierce in March. At first glance, the Impel and the Velocity might look alike because they share the same cab design. However, there are noticeable differences in the available features and trim levels, which contribute to the price variation between the two models.
The new Impel engine in Schiller Park is quite striking, as captured in several photos by Larry Shapiro. One of the standout features of Engine 455 is its low hose bed design, which has grown increasingly popular over the past few years. This particular design resembles those used extensively in New York City for decades. The pump panel also caught attention, showcasing a foam system along with color-coded gauges, adding both functionality and visual appeal.
Recently, Engine 455 was deployed to Bensenville and Chicago for joint training exercises with firefighters from both departments. These drills took place in buildings undergoing demolition as part of the O’Hare Modernization Project. A comprehensive photo gallery and video segment documenting these training sessions and the equipment involved are available HERE.
Interestingly, Engine 455, built in 2007, initially served as a demonstrator for Pierce before being acquired by Schiller Park earlier this year. Its lack of chevron striping on the rear highlights its unique history. During the training event, the engine provided essential hand lines, proving its reliability and versatility. Larry Shapiro’s images capture the essence of this impressive vehicle, showcasing its sleek profile and advanced features.
Schiller Park Engine 455 continues to play a crucial role in enhancing local firefighting capabilities. Its integration into collaborative training efforts underscores the importance of interdepartmental cooperation in ensuring public safety. As more communities adopt innovative designs like the low hose bed, it’s clear that modern firefighting vehicles are evolving to meet the demands of contemporary operations.
