Divers search for dog in Buffalo Grove 1-26-12
On Saturday, a dog owned by a resident of Buffalo Grove ventured into a small lake off Fremont Way within the Crossings neighborhood and unfortunately met its demise. The Buffalo Grove Fire Department responded immediately, but despite their best efforts, they couldn’t locate the dog.
Fast forward to Thursday, when a renewed search effort was initiated. This time, Buffalo Grove firefighters were joined by additional divers from Long Grove and Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, along with the Lake County Sonar Team. For several hours, these teams combed the area meticulously, but the dog could not be found, and the operation was eventually called off.
Larry Shapiro and Tim Olk arrived at the scene to document the recovery efforts, capturing several compelling images. Their photographs offer a glimpse into the challenging conditions faced by those involved in the search.
One particularly striking image shows the dive operation underway, with firefighters carefully maneuvering a boat to the edge of the frozen lake. In another, a member of the Lake County Sonar Team can be seen drilling through the ice to insert the sonar equipment. These photos highlight the technical complexity and physical demands of the operation.
Other images capture moments of preparation and teamwork, such as when a diver is assisted in gearing up before entering the frigid waters. There’s also a poignant shot of a diver being helped out of the water after completing his underwater search, clearly exhausted from the ordeal.
Despite the thorough efforts, the sonar images revealed multiple objects that resembled the dog, but none could be confirmed as the missing pet. The final images show the divers and support team packing up, their expressions reflecting both fatigue and the bittersweet conclusion of their mission.
