Celebrating a Collaborative Future at the Reimagined Smithsonian Arts + Industries Building

At Autodesk, we often find ourselves pondering the influence of technology and its potential to shape the future. During these unprecedented times, it's easy to focus on the daunting aspects of challenges such as climate change or social equity. However, we choose to concentrate on the brighter side—how our customers harness technology to build a thriving future. Automation and artificial intelligence, when used thoughtfully, can significantly enhance human capabilities and address some of the world's biggest problems. Our vision is to provide individuals with the freedom to engage in creative endeavors while allowing technology to manage repetitive and time-consuming tasks. This concept encapsulates the future of work that we envision. Excited to collaborate with the Smithsonian, we're proud to contribute to the creation of an immersive experience debuting this November at the historic Arts + Industries Building (AIB), America's first national museum. After nearly two decades of dormancy, this iconic space is being revitalized as a platform for exploring ideas and questions about the future. FUTURES, the Smithsonian's inaugural large-scale exploration of the future, will blend captivating art, cutting-edge technology, innovative design, and historical context. Visitors will be encouraged to dream big and envision multiple possibilities for the future. As part of FUTURES, we've developed The Co-Lab, featuring an interactive experience called Future Communities. This activity invites participants to collaboratively construct a sustainable community block using advanced analytics and generative design technology from Autodesk. Each visitor adopts a distinct role with specific objectives and factors, balancing social, ecological, and economic considerations. From green spaces to public service access, participants will witness firsthand how these elements interact and influence outcomes. The evolving community block will be displayed in real-time, showcasing the trade-offs involved in achieving various goals. The Co-Lab itself reflects the power of generative design, with its structure meticulously crafted using sustainable materials and modular metal joints. Constructing a 22-foot-tall exhibit that supports multiple large screens within a heritage building is no small feat. Our team, leveraging generative design technology, successfully identified optimal dimensions and placements for the wood beams and metal joints, ensuring a robust yet lightweight structure that minimizes waste during assembly and disassembly. Inspired by the World's Fair pavilions of the past, the Arts + Industries Building originally opened in 1881. It served as a showcase for groundbreaking inventions like Edison's lightbulb and NASA's rockets. As the nation celebrates the building's 175th anniversary, we're thrilled to be part of its next chapter, symbolizing the innovative spirit that continues to drive progress. For more details about FUTURES, check out the official website. The exhibit will be free and accessible to the public from November through July 2022. This collaboration with the Smithsonian represents more than just a technological showcase; it's a testament to the transformative power of creativity and partnership. Together, we're paving the way for a future shaped by imagination and innovation.
