BIM 360 Highlights Year of Innovation in Construction Project Management – What’s Next?

As we gear up for one of our favorite weeks of the year—Autodesk University 2018, where we bring together over 10,000 customers and partners—we wanted to take a moment to reflect on the incredible journey of BIM 360 over the past year. In just twelve months, we’ve released 33 updates, introduced more than 130 features, and established 60 new software integrations. These achievements underscore our commitment to fostering rapid development and collaboration with our customers. Together, we’re delivering cutting-edge technology designed to streamline key construction workflows. By centralizing project information for all stakeholders and opening the door to innovation through deeper data access and analysis, we’re helping to shape the future of the industry. ![BIM 360](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/43fe7098c56312166bd9742164ed20f1.jpg) --- ### Next-generation BIM 360 Platform Last November, we unveiled a preview of the next-generation BIM 360 platform, a groundbreaking re-engineering of our BIM 360 offerings on a shared data platform. This new architecture seamlessly connects design and construction processes, teams, and information, creating a truly integrated experience. Today, customers are embracing BIM 360 to enhance workflows such as: - **Project Controls**: Efficiently managing Requests for Information (RFIs), submittals, and packages. - **Document Distribution**: Streamlining set management and approval workflows while ensuring transparency in document handling. - **Revit Cloud Work-Sharing**: Facilitating smoother collaboration across the project team. - **Coordination**: Leveraging automated clash detection to preemptively address potential design conflicts. - **Quality and Safety Inspections**: Customizable templates and issue attributes ensure compliance and accountability. - **Field and Office Synchronization**: Keeping workers in sync via the Desktop Connector and a unified mobile app for iOS and Android. - **Real-Time Updates**: Providing the project team with crucial insights through Project Home and detailed reports. We’re incredibly excited to announce that we’re expanding BIM 360’s capabilities to include **Cost Management**. Managing budgets effectively requires meticulous oversight of budget items, and this new feature integrates contracts, budgets, and change order management directly into the BIM 360 platform. Available as a limited availability pre-release in December, this module empowers teams to manage all cost-related construction activities in a single, cohesive software experience. Built on Forge, BIM 360 fosters a vibrant collaborative ecosystem within the broader software landscape. Since launching the BIM 360 Integration Partner Program last year, we’ve added 60 new integrations, swelling our construction partner ecosystem to over 100 members. BIM 360 now seamlessly connects with platforms like 3DR, DESTINI Estimator, BuilderBox, EarthCam, Egnyte, FotoIn, HoloBuilder, SiteSense, NoteVault, OnTarget, Pype.io, Sensara, Triax, and many others under development. These integrations ensure that project information from diverse software systems flows into BIM 360, creating a single source of truth. This empowers customers to harness insights from their innovative construction technologies. Our collaboration with the software ecosystem aims to deliver the most comprehensive support for interconnected business processes. To achieve this, we’ve made significant investments through the Forge Fund in companies like eSUB, ManufactOn, Smartvid.io, Rhumbix, and Project Frog. These forward-thinking firms are driving innovation with cloud-based solutions that revolutionize construction project delivery. Our most substantial investment this year came with the acquisition of Assemble Systems. Paired with the rich data generated using Revit, Assemble Systems’ technology enables advanced 4D and 5D estimating and scheduling. This empowers construction project teams to plan strategically, manage bids, estimate costs, and execute assembly tasks more efficiently. Assemble provides a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) solution that enables construction professionals to manipulate, query, and link BIM data to essential workflows spanning bid management, estimating, and scheduling. By leveraging models, drawings, and point clouds in a user-friendly cloud-based environment, Assemble bridges gaps in design, preconstruction, and construction phases. --- ### Model Coordination The BIM 360 platform introduces robust features that simplify construction coordination by automating both clash detection and clash resolution. Here’s what BIM 360 now offers: - Assign clashes as issues within BIM 360 and notify relevant team members. - Mark clashes as resolved if they don’t require attention (e.g., minimal overlap or addressing them in the field). - Filter and group aggregated models for easier understanding. - Utilize new viewer tools for multi-model visualization to aid in resolving coordination challenges. Previously, BIM 360 users could aggregate models, run automated clash detection, and review results—all since the preview announcement last year. However, the ability to support coordination workflows for multi-format 3D models sets BIM 360 apart from conventional construction management apps. These traditional tools often focus solely on 2D workflows with optional 3D viewing capabilities. Model coordination holds immense value for general contractors, subcontractors, and fabricators, as it underpins workflows throughout the project lifecycle—from design and quantification to scheduling, fabrication, on-site layout, installation, and commissioning. While Autodesk continues to address current pain points, we’re also looking ahead. Today, software assists in managing RFIs and change orders, but we’re exploring the application of predictive analytics early in the coordination phase to eliminate costly RFIs and change orders before they arise. Many of our customers already leverage the machine learning and AI capabilities embedded in BIM 360 to enhance safety and quality. They’re urging us to apply similar innovations to model coordination, and we’re actively working on it. ![Predictive Analytics](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/6baffd530320462643ee5a1b97935318.jpeg) --- ### Connected Data, Predictable Outcomes Digitizing processes and consolidating data pave the way to predictability. The BIM 360 platform is engineered from the ground up to centralize project data—starting with the Revit model, expanding on initial design intent during preconstruction and fabrication, and gathering critical information on-site to enable real-time decision-making. BIM 360 links data from project inception to completion by maximizing the value and utility of data and geometry throughout the lifecycle. This transformation of raw data into actionable insights is achieved through: - User-friendly dashboards for monitoring project progress and mitigating risks. - Advanced reporting tools to assess project health comprehensively. - Intelligent project insights extracted via machine learning to identify, prevent, and predict risks. The **BIM 360 platform**, coupled with tighter integrations to Autodesk’s premier authoring software, empowers customers to centralize project data, streamline operations, and optimize outcomes from start to finish. This connected approach leads to predictability, transitioning from digitized information and processes to integrated, automated workflows and actionable insights derived from project data to foster continuous improvement. --- As we look toward the future, we remain committed to pushing boundaries and delivering solutions that empower the construction industry. Join us at Autodesk University 2018 to see these advancements in action and discover how BIM 360 can transform your projects.
