Autodesk Opens Technology Centre in Birmingham, UK to Shape the Future of Making Things
The Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) has revolutionized the way we work, bringing with it personalized and intelligent products that demand a blended approach to design and production. These innovations rely heavily on advanced manufacturing techniques to achieve their potential. To assist manufacturers in this transformative era, Autodesk has established an Advanced Manufacturing Facility (AMF) in Birmingham, the UK's second-largest city.
This state-of-the-art facility, the first of its kind in Europe, features cutting-edge manufacturing tools and serves as a collaborative hub where Autodesk can partner with clients. Spearheading the Future of Making Things
Autodesk has already committed significant resources to the Birmingham region, having acquired Delcam in 2013 and gaining access to a suite of leading CAM solutions. Leveraging this foundation, the newly outfitted multi-million-pound facility is equipped with top-tier machinery, including models from DMG Mori, Hermle, Steifelmeyer, and Hamuel, along with robots from ABB and KUKA Robotics.
From hybrid manufacturing to human-robot collaboration and clay milling, both large and small customers and partners can explore diverse techniques to understand how they can harness the future of manufacturing. In essence, it’s the factory of tomorrow realized today.
The tech center also includes a laboratory to keep data central to every project. Engineers will have access to data collected from smart machines, enhancing the link between design and manufacturing processes. This ensures more informed decision-making and more efficient project delivery. During the opening event this week, attendees witnessed how Autodesk’s recently released cloud-based Fusion Production software can monitor, analyze, and manage data generated during live fabrication processes on mobile devices.
Companies like BMW and GKN Additive are collaborating with Autodesk engineers at the Birmingham center. With AD9100D certification, the team is also capable of handling specialized aerospace projects.
Investing in Future Engineers
Beyond client partnerships, the center will serve the local educational community, showcasing how modern technologies have reshaped manufacturing and inspiring the next generation of engineers and product designers. Through Autodesk’s engagement with the STEM Ambassador Network, members of the Birmingham team will collaborate with local universities and research facilities, including the MTC in Coventry. This will involve participation in specific projects and student competitions such as World Skills, F1 in Schools, and VEX Robotics.
