As seen around … Cedar Rapids, IA

I'm a native of the Chicago area and have been following your blog for a while. Tonight, I witnessed a major fire at an office building here in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where I currently live. I wasn't sure if your readers would be interested in these photos, and since the situation is still ongoing with no official reports yet, I don’t have much information to share. I’ve attached a few images—I have more if you’re interested.

 

From what I could tell, the Cedar Rapids Fire Department described it as a “major fire” on their Twitter feed. I saw five fire engines, two ladder trucks (from different cities), two ambulances, a heavy rescue unit, two battalion chief vehicles, and another staff car. I heard several explosions and ran to the scene from my apartment, which is just a block away. When I arrived, there were flames coming out of the roof, and the first engine was pulling up right behind me. I believe everyone inside the building made it out safely.

 

The building appeared to house a hospital and some offices, but I’m not 100% certain due to the explosions and smoke. I’ll try to get more details as the situation develops.
