ABB wins order for STX Finland Cruise Line Automation System

Zurich, Switzerland, September 18, 2012 – ABB, the world's leading power and automation technology group, announced that it has won a new order to provide a complete automation and energy management system for a 99,300 GT cruise ship in STX Finland. The cruise is owned by TUI, a joint venture between German travel company TUI AG and Royal Caribbean Cruises, which is about 295 meters long and 35 meters wide and will be a member of TUI's luxury cruise fleet.
As an experienced shipyard, STX Finland specializes in serving high-tech projects with innovative and environmentally friendly solutions. This highly complex and innovative ship was designed and built by STX Finland and TUI Cruises and is expected to be delivered in the spring of 2014. With 1,250 cabins, it can accommodate 2,500 passengers and 1,000 crew members. It uses a lot of environmental protection technology and its energy efficiency is particularly remarkable.
ABB solutions help ships to better monitor energy and power consumption, provide detailed operational information, maximize shipboard system performance and energy efficiency, and ensure passenger safety and comfort. “This project is a milestone for ABB's ship automation business. This project demonstrates the importance of providing energy efficiency solutions based on software and digital information.” Rami Jokela, Head of Ship Information and Control Systems, ABB Ship and Crane Business “This once again strengthens ABB's leadership in power and automation system integration.”
ABB's scope of supply includes an integrated ship management system (VMS), power management and high voltage AC control system (HVAC), emergency shutdown system (ESD) and energy management system. The entire system includes approximately 13,000 I/O points and uses ABB's flagship 800xA automation platform.
The ship will become the first cruise ship in the world to use the Ethernet-based IEC61850 protocol as the communication protocol for the plant management system. This technology will be applied to the entire power and propulsion system provided by ABB and is expected to be delivered in the second half of 2013.
In 2011, ABB expanded its product line of ship information and control system solutions, including a range of ship consulting and fleet management solutions, integrated automation, ship management and control systems, marine instrumentation and sensors to optimize ship performance and Performance, improve energy efficiency, improve the reliability, utilization and operational safety of shipborne equipment.
