Off the beaten path … Super Bowl

This message is from Dennis McGuire, Jr.

I know it’s not in the Chicago area, but I thought it was an interesting story worth sharing.

From NorthJersey.com:

The Super Bowl XLVIII is set to be one of the most unique in recent history, not just because of the game itself, but also due to the complex public safety arrangements involved. The event will take place at the Meadowlands, a region with a distinct geographic layout that requires coordination across multiple federal, state, county, and municipal agencies. What makes this even more unusual is that much of the local fire protection will come from a mostly volunteer force — the Meadowlands Fire Department.

Most of the surrounding communities, including East Rutherford, rely on volunteer fire departments, which is quite different from the centralized paid departments typically found in major metropolitan areas. However, the entire Meadowlands complex — home to MetLife Stadium, the Izod Center, the racetrack, and the Quest Center — is protected by the Meadowlands Fire Department. Established in 1975, the department has 22 members and operates out of a station on Route 120 in East Rutherford. It's responsible for all emergency responses within the complex during events.

The department covers key access points, including roadways leading to the stadium, portions of Route 120, Barry’s Creek Road, and Route 3 between the stadium and arena. It also includes the flyover bridge from Route 3 over the New Jersey Turnpike into the complex. Their fleet includes a 2009 quint aerial ladder, two mini-pumpers, and a smaller vehicle designed for quick response. This last one, described as "a glorified golf cart," carries 100 pounds of water and 10 gallons of foam, making it ideal for reaching high-traffic areas quickly.

In addition to the Meadowlands Fire Department, mutual aid agreements have been established with neighboring towns. East Rutherford is coordinating these efforts, working alongside departments from Carlstadt, Wood-Ridge, and others. On game day, these departments will stand by in case extra support is needed. Meanwhile, Lyndhurst Fire Department is also preparing to assist, with two units deployed for the event. They’ll be covering their own town as well, since many visitors are expected to come through the area.

"Any resources we need will be available in nearby towns — we just need to pick up the radio and we're on our way," said Assistant Fire Chief Paul Haggerty. "There will be strategic units stationed in different fire stations under a joint plan we've been working on for almost a year."

East Rutherford officials have also taken the time to observe previous Super Bowls to learn from past experiences. Haggerty praised the city for its strong coordination and preparation, calling it a model for other regions facing similar challenges.
