Barrington Countryside FPD … begins service

The Barrington-Courier Review recently published an article highlighting the successful launch of the new, independent Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District. After months of emotional and challenging negotiations between the village of Barrington and the Countryside Fire Protection District, both sides are reporting that the first week of operations has gone smoothly. Scott Motisi, a battalion chief with the newly formed district, described the transition as "very cohesive." He emphasized that the team has worked well together, integrating both new hires and former members from the village department. “It’s a group mentality,” he said. “Everyone has helped each other in training and sharing their specialties.” Jeff Swanson, the district’s chief and administrator, noted that during the first seven days, the Countryside Fire Protection District handled approximately 50 calls across its 46-square-mile area. Meanwhile, the Barrington Fire Department, which serves a smaller 5-square-mile area, responded to 29 calls. Fire Chief James Arie praised the seamless transition, saying, “It’s going great. The guys have adjusted to the new arrangement. There have been no issues or hiccups.” Despite harsh winter conditions, including heavy snow on January 4 and extreme cold through January 6, the first week was not overly difficult for either department. However, the most challenging day for the Countryside Fire Protection District came on January 8, when firefighters responded to 15 calls—many related to burst pipes due to thawing. Motisi, a former lieutenant with the Barrington Fire Department, confirmed that all calls were managed without the need for mutual aid. Motisi, one of three new battalion chiefs hired by the district, said that the agency is still adapting to the significant changes in local fire services. The district has already received new equipment, including hydraulic-powered ambulance cots and a 3,000-gallon tanker. According to Motisi, the months of October and November were focused on orientation, and the current phase is dedicated to training. Firefighters have trained on breathing apparatus, reviewed response protocols, practiced search and rescue scenarios, and familiarized themselves with the layouts of local hospitals. More changes are expected, including the arrival of new ambulances and the hiring of six additional firefighter/paramedics. Chief Arie noted that the village department’s transition has been smooth, as most of its 16 firefighters are already familiar with the community. The department operates with three shifts at the public safety building, each led by a shift commander. Like the Countryside district, Arie said his team is enthusiastic and fully prepared to serve the community.
