This message is from Eric Haak: Here are some photos taken early on during the Chicago Fire Department’s 2-11 alarm this morning (June 9, 2019) at 62nd and Harlem. The fire spread quickly through multiple units, and with poor hydrant pressure, the alarm was upgraded to a still and box. What you can’t see in these images is that for each exterior unit, there was another one accessible only via an interior hallway. As the fire moved over the top of those units and the roof became unstable, crews had no choice but to go defensive. Squad 5A was set up inside the lot, while Tower Ladder 54 was positioned on Harlem. Tower Ladder 39 was also on scene, though I’m not sure if they ever got water into the structure. There were some unusual situations too, like Engine 8 pumping from the corner of 61st and Harlem, and a Summit engine supplying water to the incident.
